Consider a Ductless Mini-Split HVAC for Your New Installation

admin • September 12, 2016

The fall is a time of year when many homeowners look over their options for new HVAC installations. It’s easier to schedule replacements and installations between the two times of the year when HVAC technicians are at their busiest. If you’re one of the many people thinking about arranging for a new heating and cooling system during the fall, we recommend that you give serious consideration to a ductless mini split.

What’s a ductless mini split system?

It’s a type of heat pump (i.e. a comfort system that works as both a heater and air conditioner) that operates through a series of small indoor air handlers mounted throughout a house. This is different from the conventional split system, where there’s only a single large indoor air handler that blows conditioned air into a ventilation network and then to the various rooms. The air handlers in a ductless system have their own refrigerant coil and blower fan, and they send conditioned air straight into the living spaces.

What benefits does this type of system offer?

  • Automatic zone control: Each of the air handlers of a ductless mini split heat pump can be turned on and off separately from the rest of the system. This means you only have to heat/cool rooms that require it. Leaving the air handlers off in empty rooms will help you save money.
  • Space saving: Ductless systems are fantastic choices if you’re building a new home, remodeling, or have an older home without room for ducts. You can enjoy central heating and cooling without surrendering valuable space to ductwork.
  • Energy saving: Ducts both lose and gain heat along their length, reducing system efficiency. Ductless systems don’t have this energy loss. In addition, ductless air handlers use smaller motors and consume less energy than standard systems.
  • Indoor air quality improvements: Ductless systems don’t pick up the dust and debris that often collect inside of ductwork. A home will enjoy air with less contaminants in it, and this can make a huge difference for people in a household who suffer from respiratory problems or allergies.
