Lower Your Heating Bills with These Tips
The New Year is here, and that also means we’re in the deeps of winter. This is when a home heating system is put under the most rigorous use, resulting in higher utility bills to pay for comfort. It’s almost unavoidable to see a rise in energy costs during the winter, at least compared to costs during the fall. But you may be paying far more than you need to. If your current heating bills seem too high, you can take some steps to cut down on energy use and improve your heating system.
Make sure the house is properly insulated
The heat seal on a house is what allows the building to trap heat and keep it inside. If the heat seal is broken because of poor insulation and air leaks around windows and doors, it draws away heat to the outside. The heating system must run longer to make up the difference. Check around your house for locations where there are drafts. Place weather stripping around doors to the outside and caulk windows to stop air leaks. Rooms that seem colder than the others may have inadequate wall insulation. Aging or damaged attic insulation is also a major source of heat lose.
Practice moderate use of the thermostat
Raising and lowering the thermostat on comfort whims is a big energy waste: it forces the furnace, heat pump, etc. to turn on and off frequently, which consumes a large amount of energy. Raising the temperature too high also drains power without necessarily delivering comfort. For maximum energy savings, you want to set the thermostat to around 68°F during the day and put on an extra layer of clothing. Lower the temperature a further 5 to 8° at night when people are asleep. The smaller the heat difference between inside and outside, the slower the loss of heat to the outside, and you can save up to 25% off heating costs.
Always act fast to repair a malfunctioning heating system
A heater with a repair need will strain harder to do its job and consequently draw on more power. This is true even if the malfunction isn’t causing the heater to put out less warmth than normal. If you detect your heating system making excessive noise, turning on and off rapidly, or experiencing a drop in airflow, don’t wait for the problem to worsen. The sooner you have the heater fixed, the sooner you’ll have heating costs back to normal.
Replacing an over-the-hill heating system
Most heating systems last between 10 to 20 years. A heater that’s older than 15 years is probably ready to be replaced. If you can’t account for higher heating costs, it’s possible that the age of the heater is the problem. The solution is to have a new, more energy-efficient system, put in place. You’ll start saving on heating costs immediately, and you’ll also have a more reliable comfort system with many years of efficient service ahead of it.
