Consider Ductless Mini-Split for Fall Installation

The fall is a period of rest between the weather extremes we experience in New York. That makes it the ideal time to make changes to the comfort systems in your house, either for cooling, heating, or both. It’s much easier to schedule the work, and you’ll have fewer worries about going without your comfort system for the short time it takes to remove the old one and have it replaced.

You have many choices for both heating and cooling your home. One option you may not have considered is a ductless mini split heat pump. This type of system has been popular in commercial buildings for years, as well as in homes in Europe and Japan. They are appearing more often in residential buildings in the U.S. as people discover the advantages they offer.

What are these advantages of a ductless mini split?

The main benefit of using ductless systems is their flexibility and ease of installation. (They still require professionals to handle the installation work, however.) Because ductless mini splits don’t use standard ductwork-based ventilation, they can fit almost any type of house. They are best for two extremes of houses: old, historic homes and new construction homes.

  • Older homes: A house built before 1970 may not have any ductwork in it to allow for a central AC and heating system. Until the ductless mini split, these homes had to rely on window air conditioner units. Ductless systems allow these homes to enjoy the efficiency and effectiveness of central heating and cooling without having to find ways to insert ducts.
  • New construction: When building a new home, going with a ductless mini split from the start removes the problem of leaving space for a ventilation system. This not only provides more room, it allows more flexibility in construction. New construction also includes add-on rooms, where using a ductless system prevents interference with the rest of the HVAC system.

Ductless mini split heat pumps provide other benefits aside from the ease with which they can fit different homes.

  • Reduced heating and cooling costs: A ductless system can help save money on utility bills. The smaller motors consume less power, and the lack of ducts means there’s no heat loss or heat gain through duct walls.
  • Zone control: Since each of the individual blowers inside a house (the “mini” part of “mini splits”) can be operated without affecting the others, usually with a remote control, there’s no need to run blowers in rooms that are empty and don’t need heating or cooling. This is another way to save energy.
